FAQs

The Malta National Poisons Centre provides immediate professional advice following cases of overdose or exposure to a toxic substance.

Call us if you or someone close to you has come into contact with a poison or a potentially harmful substance.

A poison is any substance that can harm your body. Contrary to popular belief, any substance can be poisonous. This includes medications, drugs, household and industrial chemicals, batteries, toxic fumes, plants, animals (like insects and jellyfish), and more.

Our service is available to everyone, including the general public and healthcare professionals.

Our helpline is open every day, including Sundays and public holidays, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Please tell us the substance involved, the amount taken, and the time of exposure. We’ll also need your details and information about the person exposed, such as their weight, to assess the risk accurately.

If exposure happens outside our helpline hours, visit a health centre or the Emergency Department based on the situation’s severity. Clinical Toxicologists are available 24 hours a day to assist medical doctors working in these entities.

If you suspect that you may have been poisoned, you may contact us for guidance on the appropriate steps to take, even when you are abroad. In that case you can call us on +356 2559 4600.

Food poisoning is usually caused by bacteria and may require antibiotics. It’s best to consult your doctor. However, if you’re unsure, feel free to give us a call.
